[20:07] I'm Chris Deavellar, affectionately known around here as "Devo". I'm the art director extraordinaire for Fallen Earth.
[20:07] <[FE]Cory> Hi, I'm Cory Farris, Senior Environment artist at FE. I've been with the company for 7 years. I designed the layout for most of the levels in FE. Cave of Beasts, Coppermine and New Toro to Deathmatch, CTF and Assault.
[20:08] <[FE]Wes> Heya! Thanks for coming. I'm Wes Platt, Director of Content Development on Fallen Earth. These days, the job is pretty much how it sounds: I help guide the work we're doing on future content in the game, primarily when it comes to new missions, regions, and systems development.

[20:09] How can faction be designed to compete with clan loyalties? Can it? Should it?
[20:10] Please make sure questions are more Art oriented.  :)
[20:10] <[FE]Wes> Sure, it can be designed to compete with clan loyalties, but we have to be careful how we proceed. That's something we're looking at. Nothing set in stone, but we are working toward making factions much more important.

[20:13] From the forums: Aikatears: when can assault bloodsport be seen (or tested)
[20:14] <[FE]Cory> The turn around time for a new map is about 1.5 months. Deathmatch from start to finish took 2 months. CTF took a month, and I nailed down Assault start to finish in 3 weeks. Given these time frames, I hope to have new bloodsports maps to you guys before the ones out now (plus assault) are still fresh and new.

[20:15]   Hi. Could we get the devs to explain the degree of amount of effort that it takes to add new art objects to the game. Players seem to think that the devs do not model every object players wish to see in the game out of spite or something. ;)  
[20:17] 5. 3d is not a fast process. We aim for high quality artwork, and that takes time. We try to get the most bang for the buck, and go for the big stuff, and we just can't get to everything. A company like Mythic or Cryptic has 45-50 artists on staff. Mine is a bit smaller, but we aim to make things as awesome as possible.

[20:18] <[SNDR]Erasmus> Q5 : With the Cut in Icarus staff, can we expect a wider variety of skins for weapons, take for example the 180 rifles line, they all prettymuch look exactly the same, and in the Heavy case, shorter barrel but carry handel with inbuilt scope, the very close similarity isn't so stimulating, might we expect a larger variety?  
[20:18] Actually, skins aren't that difficult to do. The new high level rifles are actually similar intentionally, coming from a modular system. We do have plans for new color schemes and such on those, as well as skins for armors and such. We'll likely be doing MORE of that sort of thing in the future.

[20:20] Why are the nights so long and can they please lower the amount of nightime in game?
[20:21] The day/night cycle is tough to change, as it requires a complete relighting of the cycle as well as some coding changes and we'd have to re-render the skybox. It's been discussed, but it's not our highest priority.

[20:22] <[SNDR]Roton> Are there any plans for some sort of vechile color paints?
[20:22] We dont' have any immediate plans for different vehicle colors, but it's certainly something we can look at in the future. 

[20:23]   <[SNDR]Erasmus>If you are looking at a more modular system, could this imply a modding system to crafting? using similar skins/models for a rifle adn simply "tuning" with added graphics to a rifle, for instance, underslung grenade launcher or laser pointer?
[20:24] We did design the rifles to have a "progression", and the models reflect the advantages of the crafting progression. We have been working really closely with the designers to really cater the art to the design, for both weapons and art. 

[20:25]   My pet project is adding racetracks/supercross tracks.  Can we expect to see something like this soon?  I think it could be done with existing art and land deformation.  How hard a project might this be?
[20:25] <[FE]Cory> I actually saw your post on this in the forums, Canyontrader. I really liked the idea and it started the gears turning. It's a possibility from an Art perspective. On an initial implementation it would probably be all aesthetic, for the RP players, with missions associated coming later.

[20:26] <[SNDR]Roton> Are there any plans to allow players to change tat's and makeup in game, not just hair?
[20:27] <[FE]Wes> Changing tattoos and makeup may be possible, but it's not currently on our immediate to-do list. We do recognize that it's the sort of tool that players would like to have, it's just a matter of finding the time and resources once we've gotten all the big issues off our plate. 

[20:27] When can we expect the action bar to work properly? items have to constantly be re-dragged to work correctly.  and also, what about the Raid system, the Dots don't show up on radar once you convert to a raid.
[20:28] <[FE]Wes> The user interface continues to be a work in progress. We're in the process of making a lot of tweaks to it.  

[20:29] i realy enjoy the sky ingame great piece of work , what can we expect from the weather effect changes ? storms and lighting are great i realy look forward for those, but is it going to rain offten on desert area ? or are sandstorm a posibility ?
[20:30] <[FE]Wes> The weather effects are still in their infancy, so we're not sure how far we'll go with them. A lot of testing remains to be done just to make sure they're working the way we want them too. We're excited about the prospect, though. More ambience to create liveliness in the world is great. 

[20:31]   Forum question: JKillz: What pop-culture references can we expect to see deep within your artwork & animations?
[20:31] <[FE]Cory> There's a lot of wild west sort of references that we have strewn throughout the world, Fistfull of Dollars, Good the bad, and the ugly etc. Wally the Waffle was actually a joke on Ron McDonald. The Billboard for Globohomes was a jab at the housing crisis.  

[20:32] What is your favorite piece of art you designed and what is your favorite another artist designed?
[20:32] I was a creature artist before I was the art director. I think that either the Porkupine or the White Underdweller are the pieces that I'm proudest of. For the record, the Supersoldier is my least favorite piece that I did, which is why it got the new armor for Deadfall, and it will be getting a new body in the near future as well that I'm much happier with.
[20:32] My favorite piece from another artist...Los Alamos. It's cheating a bit, but I am super stoked with how that city came out. We tried a ton of new stuff, and my team just dominated on that one. For armor, I love the new core suit, and I think the new enforcer armor is pretty keen, too.
[20:33] <[FE]Cory> I really enjoyed modeling the high tech stuff in game. The monorails were a nice challenge, the Lifenet Facility exteriors were a blast, but my favorite piece that I've done thus far was the CTF flag object and flagstand.
[20:33] <[FE]Wes> Right now, my favorite work of art is the town of Los Alamos and the surrounding area. It really demonstrates the benefits of using the terrain sculpting that Devo pushed for and it's the shape of things to come for the rest of the game's visual development.

[20:33]   <[SNDR]Roton> How much effort would it take and could it be seen in the near future, to have finish moves, say for example head explosions for rifleman getting the kill, or severed limbs for the melee? 
[20:35] It would take a lot of effort, actually. That would take frontend, backend, animation, particles, and modeling to pull off. That said, we're really working hard to improve combat, and we have lots of ideas we're tossing around.

[20:36]   Forum question: Martinos: Will there ever be an increase in bag and/or vault slots?
[20:37] <[FE]Wes> We don't have plans to expand existing bag slots on players or in their current vaults. But we'll be adding a special vault that will only be available to players who reach Los Alamos, so that's extra space there. We may also do something with pets and other forms of storage.

[20:37]   Are there any plans for outfits specialized for the RP community and if so, what ideas are being tossed around atm?
[20:38] <[FE]Wes> We do have plans to offer more "in-town" gear, but we don't have a timetable for that yet. No specifics to share until we get closer to making that a reality.

[20:38] <[SNDR]XTremeZ> Will there be any chance of alternate motorcycle skins for a crusier style bike?
[20:40] Again, no plans in the immediate future, but we're always listening to you guys. You keep throwing out ideas, and we'll keep trying.

[20:40] Me and the Broken Future Team are very appreciative of the Fan Site Pack and would like to know what kind of future art assets we may see down the road?

[20:43] What one thing would you love to have in-game that currently is not possible but on your 'superduper wish list'?
[20:44] I would love to have morphable body types, a more robust tatoo system, and a cool way for you guys to have more color choices. I just don't relish the work that would cause for my guys!
[20:44] <[FE]Cory> I would love to start introducing a new Bloodsports gametype with every other patch, or even go back and tweak the original maps to be more interesting/keep things fresh. Assault is in the locked and loaded state, and will blow the first 2 game types away!
[20:44] <[FE]Wes> Bugs on the ceiling, skittering through a dark cave and dropping on unsuspecting players. It was nigh on impossible before the staff cuts. Now? No, seriously, impossible. (So, naturally, I'll keep pushing for that. I believe "impossible" is just another word for "cake.")

[20:45] My question is: There seem to be many ideas going around and things on the back-burner, so what are the changes that we are likely to see in the next few months, with regard to the in-game art?
[20:46] We have gotten some cool new environmental toys to play with in the past couple of months. The biggest is the terrain sculpting tools. We have plans to work our way back through the earlier sectors and pretty things up a bit. We're also working on our lighting, but we're not to the point where I can say more than that.

[20:46]   <[SNDR]Roton> Can we ever expect to see clan patches that may be displayed on say your torso or shoulder armor?
[20:46] <[FE]Wes> I wouldn't count on that functionality. Besides, if you're slowing down to look at a wee patch on someone's shoulder, you're probably going to be in a LifeNet pod before you read it.

[20:47]   Pherenis: With the success of Office Park what will become of the current vacant PVP zone in South Deadfall?
[20:47] <[FE]Wes> We have some changes planned for that area (and elsewhere in Deadfall) to create more interesting faction content - both PvP and PvE.

[20:48] If time and resources where not an issue, what in-game artworks, locations, etc. would you like to see perfected or vastly improved?
[20:49] Sectors 1-3! As an art director, I'm really never happy. I also took over this position about 9 months before launch, so I didn't have a lot of control over the earlier sectors (aside from making some nifty creatures). I'd love to really go back and put my "stamp" on the look of the earlier stuff.
[20:50] <[FE]Cory> Seeing the missile silo level redone to really reflect a broken down old series of manmade caves stretching for miles would be a fun and interesting addition. I really enjoyed remodeling and texturing the missile asset, and the level could use some love to match it.

[20:50] I just wanted to drop in and say how much I enjoy the game.. I played right at the beginning, left for a bit, but after not finding anything close to this great game, i'm back.  Thanks for everything you do for us!

[20:51] <[SNDR]Roton> When will there be more diverse models of character selection instead of just height, say i want a really short, really fat, bald guy?
[20:54] We have no immediate plans for more diverse character models. Character creators like Champions and APB require YEARS of development and loads of money to create. We chose a different path with our character creation, and we're trying to make it as cool as we can. If we do implement new chracter types, it will require new rigging, new animation (about 1000 of them), and new boltons just for one new toon. You'll notice that games like Gears of War and Halo only have men? That's because they couldn't even afford to spend time doing a female toon. It's a LOT, LOT, LOT of work.

[20:56] Will the landshark make a rogue appearance as one of those random critter encounters
[20:56] <[FE]Wes> Sadly, the Landshark is busted and retired. He won't be showing up as a rare spawn any time in the immediate future. But we do have some interesting baddies for people to track down when the serendipity system goes live.

[21:00] <[FE]Wes> I expect we'll have helicopters about the time that I get my bugs on the ceiling. Never say never. But don't hold your breath!

[21:17] <[FE]Cory> Our brainstorming sessions are always a blast. We try to look at what other games do well, and improve upon their tecniques with a splash of our own. We have several brainstorming sessions per week.
[21:17] I personally am a completist (Woot! for achievements!) and just have to get all the faction muts & ap on my main :P 

[21:17] i wanted to spin the wheel for content but just too hard in S3
[21:17] Achievements still aren't counting all the old missions.  I have the achievement for creating an ATV, but not the one for creating a crankshaft, obviously not possible.
[21:18] FYI - If you could be forced into a faction choice, that might be the only option. But the bright side is, you get 2 faction allies, so that's not a bad deal
[21:18] if you make spinning unattractive, it makes building an alt more appealing also
[21:18] <[FE]Wes> Forcing a faction commitment is among the ideas we're poking at.
[21:18] one of the very special thigns about fe is the awesome factions
[21:18] might be the only logical one or you stay neutral without the extras
[21:19] Perhaps forcing a clan to make such a commitment would be a wiser idea - rather than forcing an individual to do so.

[21:19] with respect: forcing is tricky....providing incentives is less problematic
[21:19] <[FE]Wes> Yes, we're thinking about the clan/faction issue too.
[21:19] allow flexibilty but reward supporting the game's rich lore
[21:19] here's a question:  While i really like the info, I hate the text format of these interviews... i'd rather see a much more multimedia (audio/visual) approach to fuuture interviews (but understand that part of marketing is to hit diverrse venues like this )
[21:20] my only worry is wheel grinding and never getting out of the hole you can bury yourself in (thinking into S4 & beyond)
[21:20] oh since the respec system one thing i have noticed say you have 62 cordination you put on a piece of gear that drops cordination, the stat goes red some but then the stat litterally loses points untill you spend ap, or you take the piece of gear and put it back on

[21:20] <[FE]Wes> We're not really limiting to any one venue.
[21:20] <[FE]Cory> I would love to design some faction based bloodsports arenas at some point. Having a level in which Chota and enforcers can jump in and duke it out would be a blast.

[21:21] btw, the early reports on Assault look awesome...and deadfall (especially LA) is a massive visual acheivement
[21:21] Faction-based BloodSports would be great, could use existing arenas, just a separate entry format
[21:21] or imagine vista raiding a tech base and while tech have to defend etc
[21:21] "hold the fort" type matches
[21:21] <[FE]Cory> having it so that each opposite has an arena with which to kill their opponent would really go a long way toward creating faction loyalties in the community.
[21:21] and why can't we go down into the river in los alamos?  I really want to wander down there
[21:22] any thoughts of having a way to enter the arena as an indivdual or a team to just practice...ie, a waiting room?

[21:23] any chance of starting a pvp match without the full players?  i waited for over a half hour in off time and never got a match started.  Kinda was bumming

[21:24] <[FE]Wes> I believe the games will start with partial queues, but there's still a wait to reach those limits. 

[21:24] hope you guys consider testing semi-persistent camps that would be worth holding/destroying in PvP zones....think that would truly expand the game's appeal with existing art assets
[21:24] <[FE]Wes> We're going to tinker with ammo costs and boost death toll rewards for the matches - hopefully that'll help raise interest :)

[21:28] Any thoughts on weapons self destructing a little fast, yet?  My melee weapons burn off 25-30% a day, at this point.   While armor loses maybe 5%, if that.
[21:28] <[FE]Cory> There are programatical issues with too much speed buffs, players start teleporting around the screen at anything above 150% speedbuff.

[21:29] No, it isn't.  Armor lasts 20 days, weapons last 3?  I don't think so. 

[21:29] Other thing is your layered shader system does not happen much in game anymore its rare but does happen when exiting blood sports not all the shaders in your layered shaders are loading up, sometimes you can see just the normals, or other texture files not sure how your custom engine is setup
